The Story of Tabitha and Her Kind Things

There was a believer in Joppa named Tabitha. She was always doing kind things for others and helping the poor….Acts 9:36

She has inspired me over the years as I have read and re-read her story. Her simple life, documented in Acts, of helping the poor and needy. I have often wondered what kind things did she do? Did she give money? Did she provide clothes to children? Did she give others a safe place to sleep at night?

And then she died.

Book Review: Thin Places by Mary DeMuth

Last week my world got rocked. One of my long-time Twitter friends, and contributing editor over at The High Calling, Cheryl Smith introduced me to the work of Mary DeMuth. Cheryl had recommended her book Thin Places. I’m a little embarrassed to say that as much as I read, I had not come across any of DeMuth’s work before now. I felt like I had been living under a rock. I can’t believe what I had been missing!

Starting to get a summer cold that was floating around, I stayed home from work one day and thought I would catch up on some reading. I was not expecting this book to wring me inside out the way it did. It totally grabbed me by the throat. Mary’s story had such weight and urgency to it, and even more than that—her spiritual wisdom and depth shone a flashlight into the hidden hurt places of my own dark heart. This allowed for God to whisper to me about my need for His continued healing and growth from past grief and disappointments. Never fun, but always necessary if as a Christian I truly am seeking a crucified life through Jesus.

This book also gave me insight into my work that I was not expecting.

The Joyful Leader

Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord. ~Psalms 119:1 NLT

I read this today and felt convicted. I have been grumping around for a few days. Tired, frustrated trying to work out problems in my flesh. This morning I was reminded that as a leader, if I am truly striving to be a person of integrity, then the outward overflow of this should be joy.

Leadership Lessons from My Breakfast with Chuck Colson

Yesterday a truly faithful servant went to be with the Lord. God used Chuck Colson’s life as a testimony of grace and reconciliation, showing the world the glory of the Father. In the upcoming days many Christian non-profit leaders and pastors of mega churches will eulogize this spiritual giant. I once had a very special “chance encounter” with this man that I had always respected, and wanted to share my very intimate story of having breakfast with Chuck Colson. I hope this will serve as an encouragement to leaders who are grinding it out in your local communities everyday. Those leaders serving the least of these in the day-to-day feet washing work that only Jesus could inspire you to participate in.

It was 2007, and at the time I was working for Care Net in Lansdowne, VA. I was at corporate headquarters for a two-day training and Care Net just happens to lease space on the beautiful Prison Fellowship campus. On site there is a charming multi-room guesthouse, which houses an apartment for the Colson’s when he wanted to be closer to work. Leadership Lessons: Allow Your Team To Work In Their Strengths

For three years now I have been blessed to work for an amazing ministry. It has proven to be the most challenging but most rewarding experience leading a team that truly believes in the mission 100%. I have never in my 17 years experience working with nonprofit ministries been apart of anything that has such internal support that drives everyone involved to external excellence.

I am often asked what is a key leadership lesson that I have really taken to heart since becoming the Executive Director of Family Life Services. My answer is simple:

I try to always always always allow my staff to operate in their strengths.

Early into the the hiring process  I ask potential staff members to take the Strengths Finder 2.0 leadership assessment by Tom Rath during their very L-O-N-G interview cycle and we share those findings with the rest of the staff.
