Determined in 2013

Last year was a life changer.

I don’t say that lightly either. So many of you shared the ups and downs with our family as we gave up our horrid eating habits.

I felt so much love and encouragement when I achieved a 15-year goal of hiking Pikes Peak.

I received prayers from strangers after they read my funny and tough moments through Fridays with Freda.

Leadership Lessons from Bierstadt ~ Manage Expectations

The day started out nothing like I thought it would. Right from the beginning I had to manage expectations. The first thing I didn’t count on was this when we pulled up to the Bierstadt parking lot…

Not even 7:30 AM and I had to begin to re-work what I thought the day would look like. I thought we were super early. I had no idea there would be that many people climbing. I thought it would be a quiet day on the trail.

Hiking a 14er

I can’t believe I’m doing this again.

Earlier this Summer when I climbed Pike’s Peak for the first time, I thought I was getting hooked. Smitten with a newfound love.

But still, I can’t believe I’m doing this again. Hiking a 14er. The very concept seems so strange for a suburban mommy who drives a Ford Freestyle and runs carpool between business meetings. I also like saying I’m hiking a 14er too, because it makes me feel so…not boring.

The True Vine Challenge ~ Abide in Stillness

This week Jeff and I are celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary in Pagosa Springs and Ouray, CO. We haven’t taken a vacation like this alone, since, well never. Leadership Lessons From The Cairns On My Pikes Peak Climb

This weekend I crossed off a huge personal goal by hiking Pikes Peak. Tomorrow over at Jeff’s Crazy Idea I will be sharing what I did to prepare and insights into the physical and mental part of this adventure.

Today I’m talking here about a very unexpected leadership lesson I learned while climbing my first fourteener.

My friend Deb went with me on this journey. She is an experienced climber who I trust and asked to go with me. My goal for her? Don’t let me die and drag my butt up the mountain even when I want to quit.

Deb was awesome. She helped me prepare weeks in advance and the day of the climb she kept me safe, focused and aware of what was going on around me. She also is a wickedly smart business woman, so I had 5 1/2 hours of personal consulting time on this trip. I’m smarter than the average bear when I pick my traveling companions.

At one point, we got to a part of the trail where she yelled over her shoulder, “Watch for the cairns”.

Friday with Freda ~ You’re Going to Climb What Mountain?

Grandma has been asking me a million questions all week about my Pikes Peak climb today.

You’re going to climb what mountain again? Pikes Peak, remember the one we drive by all the time?

How long will it take you? About five hours.
