Fridays with Freda ~ Troubles and Peace

Many of you have asked me since the Waldo Canyon Fire broke out how Freda is doing. Constant news of a natural disaster like this can make seniors anxious and I have been worried she would get sick from the smoke. Amazingly, she has been resilient.

Living through The Great Depression, World War II, floods, terrorist attacks, and personal family tragedy in her eighty-nine years of life I’m sure has helped her cope. She knows we will make it through. Watching her through all of the chaos this week I was reminded of what Jesus said…

Friday with Freda ~ When the Caretaker Needs Cared For

Grandma has been sick all week. And honestly that makes me nervous. Freda is bouncing back, but for a few days I know she did not feel like herself at all.

Coughing, sneezing, not sleeping well at night and sleeping most of the day.

Fridays with Freda ~ Some Days Are Hard

Rinse…lather… repeat.

Since my grandma Freda moved in with our family a year ago, honestly this is what some days feel like. I often get words of encouragement from friends, and truthfully, and that is enough to keep me going another day. But some days, I miss the spontaneity of life.

Before Freda, our family was able to come and go as we wished. If we wanted to take off for the day we could. Those days are pretty much gone.

Friday with Freda ~ You Are Never Too Old For A New Adventure

“This is the most beautiful place I have ever been!”

That is what she told me as we strolled around looking up at the beautiful red rock formations pressed against a crystal blue sky.

This week we packed up the family and Grandma in the Jeep and headed to Garden of the Gods. If you live in Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods is a staple attraction where you to take out-of-town family and guests. If you have time to only do one thing, this is it. Words can’t describe it, the landscape is simply stunning.

Friday with Freda ~ Connection for Seniors is Important

I love listening in on conversations between my grandma and her sister. They often connect every few weeks on the phone. Growing up I never thought of my grandma as a sister, but at eighty-nine her relationship with her sister Betty has become the longest-lasting bond she has had in her lifetime.

Friday with Freda ~ Girls Just Want to Have Fun At Village Inn

Most Fridays these days I try to get all of my work done early so I can spend some extra time with my grandma. One thing she likes to do on Friday afternoons other than go to the beauty shop, is go out to lunch.

Since she has moved in with us, I have grown fond of one of her favorite places to eat…Village Inn.

I’m not ashamed to admit this. I love pie. And lunch with grandma gives me an excuse to eat pie. It is a win win.

Seniors like Village Inn for several reasons that I knew nothing about until recently. Maybe you did not know that older folks love Village Inn because:

Friday With Freda ~ You Have To Have A Job To Do

My Grandma Freda is such a kick. At eight-nine you would think she would want to slow down a bit. But no.

Since she has moved in with us she has taken over two very specific jobs.

She rinses the dishes for me after every meal. And…

Friday with Freda ~ It Needs More Salt!

Since Grandma Freda has moved in with us, I have the privilege of cooking for a woman who for the first eighteen years of my life prepared my meals everyday. Having grown up in a home where my parents both worked, and Grandma lived with us, she was the matron in the family kitchen. I was grateful for her mad cooking skills. Her food was simply amazing.

When she moved in with our family last year, I have to be honest; I was to say the least intimidated to cook for her. At eighty-nine, she has lost her sight and can’t prepare my favorite dishes like she used to. And so when I fix her food, she can at times be a is a tough gal to wow.  Inevitably, when I ask her how anything tastes, she always says it needs more salt. It doesn’t matter what it is…It needs more salt.

It has become a huge joke in our house when she says it. Oh and if Jeff fixes the food, Jesus might as well have prepared it, because he can do no wrong, but more on this observation later.

Friday with Freda ~ Somethings You Are Never Too Old To Try

Since my Grandma Freda moved in with us last year, there have been a multitude of “firsts” for her. It started with her first trip ever on an airplane to move to Colorado with us. She still talks about the journey and hopefully it wasn’t her last plane ride! There are just some things you are never too old to try I guess.

Here is just some of the things she has proved you are never to old to try since moving in with our crazy family:

1. Jeff convinced Grandma to ride in his Jeep with the top off. She LOVED it, and can’t wait to do it again this Summer.

Friday with Freda ~ A Trip to the Beauty Shop

One of the things I have learned from my grandma is that even at 89 years old appearance matters to a girl. Every week she sets her hair with rollers. If someone is coming to the house she puts on her pretty lipstick and fixes herself up.

Freda's Beauty Bag

In a culture that has made it almost socially acceptable to be seen in public in pajama bottoms and flip flops Freda has taught me that a girl is never too old to get “gussied up”.
