Life and Leadership Reflections on My Birthday

This week I celebrate a birthday. I’m closer to 40 now than 30 and I’m surprisingly OK with this. Throughout this year God has taught me so much  in the areas of work and family. I have learned a great deal about myself and the woman who He is growing me to be. Here are just some reflections I have gleaned from this past year:

1. Life is too short for you to spend time reading anything in Comic Sans font.

2. The best food requires a bit of a mess.

3. Raising teens can actually be the best parenting stage.

4. Your husband may get a crazy idea sometimes, and if the idea is crazy enough, you should get on board.

5. U2 is still the best band on the planet. Seeing them live is a religious experience.

6. Grief is not something to check off your to do list. It doesn’t work that way.

7. Sometimes you have to just bite the bullet and pay for the orthodontics.

8. The best weekend of your year could be spent with a twelve-year old.

9. Having that hard conversation with someone is usually worse in your head than the actual talk.

10. Problems seem incredibly small next to Longs Peak.

11. There is always room for one more at the table.

12. Sometimes you have to allow others to help. Even when everything inside of you doesn’t want to ask.

13. Changing your family’s unhealthy eating habits can be hard. But SO worth the change.

14. Growth for growth sake will not take root, but growth inspired from God will flourish.

15. Taking time to count God’s special gifts is worth the time and effort and could possibly heal your soul. #1000 Gifts

What has the Lord taught you about life and leadership this past year? Do you spend time in personal reflection around your birthday or another time of year? Thanks for sharing any insights you have gained about work or home during your time of reflection.
